Beacon, NY

Are you looking for a perfect day trip destination near New York City? Look no further than Beacon, NY! This charming town, nestled in the Hudson Valley, offers a delightful mix of art, nature, and history. Beacon is about 88 minutes north of the city via the Metro North and costs about $35 for a roundtrip off-peak ticket.

I meticulously planned out my day, with every detail carefully considered. As a type A personality, I had my day scheduled to the minute, complete with meals pre-selected. I began the day with a delicious breakfast sandwich accompanied by a perfectly brewed cup of coffee (see recommendations below). Energized and fueled, I made my way back to the waterfront to prepare for an exciting tour.

Bannerman Castle, located on Pollepel Island

Nestled on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River, Bannerman Castle stands as a testament to a bygone era. This enchanting castle, with its intriguing history and stunning architecture, offers visitors a glimpse into the past. I booked the island and cruise tour directly through their website (Learn More). It was 2.5 hours including a boat ride, a walking tour, and some time to explore alone. The tour is rain or shine and does include a few slightly rocky areas. The boat picks you up on the waterfront right by the train station. The boat ride over with Captain Steve and Moose adds to the experience! You learn the history of the area that leads up to the island.

Taking a guided tour of Bannerman Castle is like stepping into a time capsule. Learn about its fascinating past as a military surplus storehouse and its transformation into a castle-like structure. Discover the role it played in safeguarding weapons and ammunition during the early 1900s. The island is currently owned by New York State, but upkeep comes from the Bannerman Island Trust. Our tour guide Wes was amazing, full of stories, and experience, and has written three books about the island (All available in the gift shop). Try and be on his tour!

Apart from its historical significance, the castle's location adds to its allure. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Hudson River, Pollepel Island offers a picturesque setting for exploration. As you traverse the island, you'll encounter breathtaking views of the river and its scenic surroundings.

So, if you're seeking a one-of-a-kind experience near Beacon, NY, make sure to include Bannerman Castle on your itinerary. Website

Shopping

Downtown Beacon is a haven for those seeking one-of-a-kind treasures. As you stroll along Main Street, you'll come across an array of boutiques and shops, each offering its own distinct style. From handmade crafts to carefully curated vintage pieces, there's something for every taste.

Browse through the eclectic mix of stores and discover hidden gems. You might stumble upon a vintage clothing store filled with retro fashion from different eras, or a shop showcasing local artisans' handmade jewelry and accessories. My suggestion is to walk down one side to the Roundhouse first to see the waterfall and then walk back up the other side. There are so many stores that you don't want to miss out!
